Chapter 1:- The beginning
I could tell that we were stopping. Most likely pulling into our new driveway. We had sent the movers ahead of us so all of our stuff was already moved in, unpacked, and set up. Today was the only day I had to learn the house and where things were before I had to go to the new school and I was a little worried about how everything was going to turn out, but I was hoping for the best. I could hear my parents excited voices rise as they continued to gush over the house. It was supposed to be a light gray, with dark gray outlining around the windows and such, three floors, and one to all myself I might add, and spacious enough that even I couldn't get hurt or anything.
"Carter, we're here. I'm going to help you in and let you get accustomed to the place," my mom said to me softly.
I sighed. My parents were always treating me like I was a baby. Sure, I was incapable of seeing what was around me, but they had lived with it for two years now. You would think that they had come to terms with it. I thought back to that fateful day and then immedately wished I hadn't. I shut down the shiver that ran through me.
"Alright, sounds good mom," I agreed with her. She opened her door and climbed out to help me. I popped mine open and waited for her to grab my hand. I could tell when she got close to me and reached the rest of the way for her. Not having my eyes had increase my hearing abilities. I was able to hear things that most people couldn't. When her hand wrapped around mine, she pulled me up and walked me to the front door, a few bumps caught me on my way in but other than that, I was fine.
When my mom opened the door I could smell the aroma of an old house . Like dust and mold, with a little fresh air thrown in for good measure. My mom lead me around the house, letting me get used to where things were and what was round them. I had taken off the sun glasses that covered my eyes most of the time, my parents were used to the bright whites and blue shine of my eyes. The only thing that had changed with my eyes was how bright the whites were, the color had changed, going from deep, dark blue to what you would see in one of those pictures of the oceans of some far away tropical place.
"And," said my mother leading me up the stairs, "This is your floor." I could see the shadows of open doors leading into rooms to be discovered. It felt like one long hall, but my mother lead me around the banister in the middle of the room. It was large and square, obviously open so that you could see the floor beneath. I broke away from my mm and began to learn this floor by myself. On the right side of the room, was a spare bedroom, with an attached bathroom. The there was a large room next to that with a rounded corner window. I felt my way around these things, and then made my way to the left side.
On the left side, was a large bathroom that held two sinks, a claw-foot bath tub, and a large shower with the shower head hanging down from the ceiling. There was a door across from the mirror that lead into my room. When I walked into my room, I saw the outline of my canopy bed on one wall. The on the other side was my desk, tv and couch, and my book shelf that was spilling over with my forgotten books, and pictures of friends and family. I had them all memorized by heart and didn't have to see them to know they were there.
Feeling around my furniture, I found my way to what I thought was my closet. Opening the door I felt my clothes hanging on all sides and continue down into the walk in closet. All i could say while I learned my room, was wow. I kept repeating that one word over and over until finally my mom put a stop to it. "Come on honey. I wanna show you something." I took her hand again and followed her back through the house and to the back door. She walked my around, showing me whee the shed was, where the tree with the tire swing was, and where there was a large garden in full bloom. I was in awe of this place. My parents had gone out of their way for me. To give me a life better than before. I was shocked when my mom said, "Oh and that's not all." She took my hand again and lead me through a trail in the garden. We stopped suddenly and I heard the creaking of an old gate and then the cool air.
"Carter. In front of you is the most beautiful lake I have ever seen. It's crystal clear, with wild flowers growing all around it, and there's a dock so you can walk out over the water. The sun is glinting off of it like in the movies. It's like a fairytale. Oh and the best part is that it's all ours. We own it." I stood there listening to my mom talk about the sight, while also listening to the sound of lapping water around the dock. I was speechless but knew I had to say something. "Mom, I don't know what to say. You've given me like the best place too ever live and I couldn't ever thank you and dad more" I could hear her sniffling and I pulled her close to me while she let out some tears.
We stood that way fro a while until dad called us both back in saying, "You girls come back in here. We need to decide on what to have for dinner. We can't cook here yet so a resturant it is." We decided to go out to one of the local places after my dad asked our neighbors down the road fro some good ideas. When we got home it was later than I thought and I was spent. Saying goodnight to my parents, I slowly found my way up the stairs and to my room. I fell alseep with thoughts of a new school day tomorrow and the difficulties ahead.
