Chapter 1:- Certainly Not You
He was her annoying next-door neighbor, her older brother's best friend. He'd stolen her dolls, spat gum on her hair, flung mud into her clothes.
At least her brother had an excuse. It was only natural for him to go around doing all those outrageous acts.
He was just her brother's friend.
And as far as she was concerned, it was going to stay that way. Until the day she died.
She was his best friend's sister, his bossy next-door neighbor. She'd kicked their cars and Lego blocks and action figures out of the way, told on them when they hid her stuffed toys, bothered them when she messed up their mud sandcastle.
He wished he could tell her just how much she irritated him beyond words.
She was just his best friend's sister. Without that link, they had nothing to do with each other.
And as far as he was concerned, distancing himself from her was all that really mattered. Until the day he took his very last breath.
