Chapter 9:- Detention
The teacher in charge, Mr. Howard, felt flustered as the two detainees saw each other.
And then they glared.
And a sense of hostility, of negativity, of tension gearing up for a big explosion, charged the atmosphere.
His hands trembled a little. Then he remembered that he was supposed to be dishing out their punishments.
"Take a seat, Mr. West." He gestured toward one of the empty seats.
Alex chose the farthest one from Vanessa. As expected.
Mr. Howard took out a sheaf of paper and distributed it to them evenly.
"I want a five-page essay on your offenses," he instructed.
Vanessa raised an eyebrow cheekily. "I thought you were supposed to have drawn up a detailed report, sir?"
"Not so detailed after all," Alex inserted acerbically.
"Well, of course. But you have to write your own side of the story."
"And this is punishment how?" they asked in perfect harmony.
A scowl crossed their faces but they didn't glance at each other.
"It is punishment because," Mr. Howard said as he returned to his seat, "you will both perform community service next week and the hours you will perform depends on your essays."
"Gee, how inventive," Alex said sarcastically.
"I don't see how it's related," Vanessa said.
"Too bad, then. Now start writing. And expect a letter regarding the community service," Mr. Howard told them.
"Fine then. So long as I'm not stuck with this baboon." Vanessa jabbed a pen in Alex's direction.
"Same here," Alex added.
They bent over their papers and began to write.
"Au contraire, Miss Sutherland and Mr West. You'll be doing it together."
Even the least intuitive of human beings could not mistake the murderous expressions on the faces of the two as something else.
