Chapter 1:- In which Adelice Eats a Muffin
Knock knock knock! Groaning, Adelice rolled over, covering her head with the pillow. Knock knock knock! "Go 'way!" Adelice half-mumbled.
"It's time for breakfast, Adelice!" a young boy's voice called through the door.
"Adelice, time for breakfast!" another boy echoed. Knock knock knock! Knock knock knock! Adelice grumbled death threats and slithered out of bed head first, pulling her blankets with her. Crawling to the door, she reached up and unlocked the dead-bolt. The door swung open and her twin brothers, Adalric and Ansel, burst into the room, with their horrible bright and cheerful faces. They got down on the floor and stuck their mirror-image faces into Adelice's. "Morning!" They yelled.
"Gah!" Adelice covered her ears. "Don't yell!" They just grinned. Already dressed for school in their suspendered trousers and shirts, their hair looked like ruffled baby-chick feathers.
"C'mon! Mum says to come and eat! And we've got permission to drag you!" Despite being only six, combined they had the strength of a twelve year old boy.
"Fine, fine..." Adelice stood up and followed the boys down the stairs. The smell of muffins wafted through the air and Adelice sighed with want. Already sitting down at the wooden table in their somewhat cramped kitchen was Adelice's mother, father, and 15 year old sister, Astrithr. A basket full of picture perfect blueberry muffins had been placed in the middle of the table.
Astrithr turned and glared at Adelice. "Please, take your time, your highness."
"Careful, Astrithr, you wouldn't want any of your beaus to see that face." Adelice plopped down at the table, next to the twins.
"At least I have beaus. Not a single boy in London would ever look at you!"
Mother rapped her fork on the table. "Hush." She turned to Father. "Say grace, dear."
Father folded his hands and bowed his head, everyone else following suite. "Father, we thank you for this meal, bless it to our bodies. Amen." As soon as amen's were mumbled around the table and Mother and Father had taken their share of muffins, chaos broke loose. Ansel and Adalric dove for the muffins, but Astrithr swatted their hands away, grabbing several for herself. Adelice snuck her hand into the basket and grabbed two. Adalric and Ansel groaned, seeing only three muffins left in the basket.
"Muuum!" They whined.
Mother didn't look up from her plate. "Adelice, Astrithr, share with your brothers." Adelice and Astrithr sighed, relinquishing one muffin each.
"Whoo!" the twins cheered.
"No yelling at the table."
"Sorry, mum." They whispered
Father looked up as he took a swig of water. "Adelice, don't you have to be at work soon?"
"What time is it?"
"Eight-thirty."
"What?!?" Adelice shot out of her chair and raced back upstairs, leaving her blankets behind. She slipped out of her nightgown and threw on a plain brown dress and white apron over her drawers and yanked on some socks. Dunking her face into the washbasin, she scrubbed at her breakfast crumbs, then raked through her hair with her fingers pulling her blonde hair back into a bun. Careful not to fall down the stairs in her socks, she ran back downstairs to the front door.
"You're going out like that?" She heard Astrithr call, but didn't have time to retort. She pulled on her shoes and coat then darted out the door.
"Bye!"
"Bye Adelice!" the twins called after her
