Chapter 4:- Message #2
Most of my images of Japan come from films. I suppose that's true for a lot
of people who live far away from that land. Some of my favourite Japanese
films are those of Hayao Miyazaki.
While his movies are often full of joy, there always seems to be a moment
when the heroine loses all hope and flops down in despair. In Kiki's
Delivery Service, I remember how Kiki falls face down on her bed, immobile,
unable to go on. I look at all the devastation in Japan and I imagine the
despair must be overwhelming. On the news tonight, they showed an elderly
woman who had lived through World War II and the bombs. Could she have
imagined nature wreaking worse havoc than that, the announcer asked. Her
face said it all: a numbness beyond suffering, the horror that her town was
no more. Ships crushed houses and cars. A man pointed to the puddle where
his house had been, shaking his head in disbelief.
My heartfelt wish is that those who have survived can find their strength
somewhere inside, despite all the loss and the damage and the horror. The
world is rooting for you all.
