Chapter 5:- Discovery

Amelia sat in the closet huddled with her discarded pillows. She was afraid, afraid for the first time in her life. Her mother and father kept her inside like many other children of the 23rd century. Home schooling was the norm and contact was limited to the virtual screen in the living room. Houses were built underground and travel was accessed by service tunnels connecting to work hubs. No one dared to go outside not since a barrage of solar flares bathed the earth in its radiation a couple hundred years in the past.
What caused Amelia to hide in the safety of her closet was a loud banging upon the hatch, a hatch that lead to the outside world, a world that Amelia was unfamiliar with and taught to avoid. Her parents were late from work, something that had never occurred .
An hour had past and the banging still continued. Sometimes the banging was regular, sometimes it continued with a fierce urgency. Another few hours passed and the banging stopped.
Amelia found the courage to leave her closet and immediately went to the door that lead to the service tunnel. A red blinking light above the door announced that the electronic mechanism was malfunctioning and she knew her parents would not be able to enter. Though she was afraid of what lay out there she found the courage to push on. Amelia opened the hatch and climbed up the ladder only to find herself in a moonlit field full of irises . In the distance she could see a group of people sitting around a lone cherry tree, it's blossoms being carried by the wind. Amelia could hear singing. A joy filled her heart and increased when she saw her parents waving to her from the distance.
