Chapter 1:- Snakeskin Boots

On a hot summer night in Weatherford Texas:

On the Brazos River was where it was.

I lived in a small home-made shelter, is how it was.

Where wilderness met the river, was where it was.

Alone, except for my Doberman, was how it was.

A hoe leaning against my shelter is what was used.

Small shelters don't have bathrooms, is why it happened.

Midnight on a dark night, is when it was.

In bed, needing to go pee, was what I was .

To face the darkness of the wilderness, was my fear.

A flashlight, a garden hoe, and my Doberman, was my plan.

Copperheads, bright orange mixed with brown, were my fears.

Green poison tails, fully puffed and ready in the summer night.

Reach slowly for the rake, every so quietly, was my first move.

Rap the hoe blade sharply against the ground, to bluff the snakes.

That had worked before. Snakes don't like that vibration, it seemed.

Wake-up my Doberman, that might help, that was my hope.

A flashlight, a garden hoe, and my Doberman, that was my plan.

Where are my boots? Oh no! They are drying-out on an outside pole.

Flip flops? to walk among the weeds, the home of the snakes?

A flashlight, a garden hoe, my Doberman, and flip flops, a lousy plan.

I can't wait. I've got to go pee. Am I too cowardly to take the chance?

Rap! Rap! Rap! I hit the hoe against a bucket just outside my shelter.

My Doberman never came; across the river was where he was.

"The Hell with it, I will face the night. I will get lucky, I hope."

I shined the flashlight, and there it was:

It was the snake used to make "Floyd's Snakeskin Boots"
