Judith turned to Mara. “Father Garrison doesn’t suspect me of anything else, does he?” Mara didn’t say anything, and Judith petted her head affectionately. “Asleep already.” Mara kept her breathing slow and controlled.
Jessica’s voice somewhere above Mara was suspicious. “Don’t get attached to this one. Father Garrison has his eye on her.”
“I know,” Judith sighed, withdrawing her hand and standing. “I should go. Peace be with you, Sister Jessica.”
The door opened and closed and Mara was alone in the room with Jessica. “I know you’re not asleep.” Mara didn’t respond. “Don’t ruin her. She’s my only hope.”
