Mara put her hands up, a gesture that asked for mercy. “I don’t want to fight anymore. You should go.”
Judith took a step closer, eyes pleading. “Mara, I do see the person. I approached you, didn’t I? I wasn’t afraid.”
“You were,” Mara remembered. “When I first spoke to you.” Her eyes fell on the grass at her feet. “It’s an expression I’m used to seeing.”
“Mara, please. Don’t make me leave.” She reached a hand forward and Mara flinched. Judith hung her head. “I’m so sorry.” Mara crossed her arms, clutching herself.
Judith left the way she came.
