“This is Judith’s number?” She indicated the number written on the back of the slip of paper.
Jessica closed her eyes to better enjoy her chocolate. “Mm-hmm,” she replied. Chocolate finished, Jessica stood. “I really should get back to work,” she said, “but remember what I said. Don’t let Judith think you’re interested in a way you’re not.”
“I heard you the first time,” Mara muttered, resentful.
“It’s worth repeating. Don’t hurt her.” Jessica shook a finger in Mara’s face. “She’s my friend, too.”
Mara pushed the accusatory finger back towards Jessica. “I’ll do what I can.”
“That’s not good enough.”
