Passing through the common room, which had once been the motel check in and lobby, the chosen Sisters that were not out on duty watched television or played games with all the docility of barnyard animals. Mara watched TV sometimes with the other women, but did not use the ping-pong table or board games on the shelf. She had no one to play against. Unlocking the door to her own room, the view inside revealed a single room with two beds, two dressers and side tables, and a tiny adjoining bathroom. On each side table was a book of Scripture.
