She worked hard to focus on the scan of the stations, waiting anxiously for sleep to take her under before she entertained any more strange thoughts. Sleep didn’t come for another hour. Mara’s thoughts kept slipping back to events from the day before. The faces of Father Garrison and the woman in the garden materialized in her mind. Their interest made her uneasy. She frowned, forcing her mind away from anxious thoughts. She focused on her breath, slowing her heart and feeling her limbs grow heavier. She thought of the scent of the garden. Did Father Garrison think it stank?
