“Judith fainted,” Father Garrison said, removing Mara’s hand from the water and toweling around the wound. His big hands holding hers so gingerly made Mara took away, overcome by it all. “We weren’t going to brand her, do you understand that now?”
Mara’s face radiated heat. “Yes,” she murmured, staring intently at the floor.
Father Garrison chuckled, taking the first aid kit from Brother Samuel. “You did a wonderful job, though. Very authentic.” He dabbed antibiotic on with a cottonball and Mara hissed through her teeth. “I didn’t know you were such an actress.” His thumb stroked her long fingers.
