I lie in the long grass; it sways and bends in the delicate breeze. My white dress lies spread out around me. My black curls whip around my face. The rain begins to fall, speckling my skin. Animals scurry to their shelters but I make no move to leave. I love the feel of the rain on my skin, the rustling of the leaves in my ear, the sounds of nature thriving around me. I feel as if I am one with the earth, like I am the only person in the world. I close my eyes, the rain like a lullaby to me and soon I am asleep. I dream of Tobey, for a couple of moments he is still alive. He holds me in his arms.   

“I’ve missed you” he tells me. I turn and look into his green eyes.

“So have I.” he leans forwards and kisses my lips. That one kiss makes my legs go weak; my mind spins as if it is the first kiss he gave me, even though we have shared so many together. For one moment I forget that this is a dream. That he is dead. Then it all comes back to me: the blinding lights, the clash of metal, the spilt blood, the accident, Tobey’s lifeless body. The tears pour from my eyes.

“Why did you leave me?” I cry “why did you leave me all alone?” pain shows in his eyes.

“I didn’t want to leave you, but I couldn’t hold on any longer.” A single tear rolls down his cheek. “I couldn’t hold on” he whispers. It hurts me to see him cry.

“It’s alright, just stay with me, let us just be.” I comfort him. I kiss his lips, our tears wetting our faces.

“I love you so much, Tobey and just for now, just for this moment, stay with me” I whisper into his hair. It kills me to know that this could be over in any moment; that we do not have long together. He looks into my eyes.

“I will” he says. He puts his hand on my face and wipes away my tears. “I am with you all the time, Amelia, I never leave your side, you might not be able to see me but I am there. I will always love you and I will not leave you until you meet me here, on the other side.” I nod, taking comfort in his words. We do not talk anymore, just our lips moving as one, our bodies lie in a tangle of arms and legs. The minutes tick by and I fear that I shall wake at any moment, I do not want to leave the warmth of Tobey’s arms, I want to stay here forever.

“Let me stay with you” I say, looking into Tobey’s eyes, I see the same longing in his as are in mine.

“I cannot let you” he whispers “I cannot let you die so young; you have your whole life ahead of you. I cannot take that away. But one day in the future we will meet again and then we will have eternity together.” He kisses me for the last time, I feel the dream coming to an end, already Tobey is fading from my arms. The tears begin again.

“I love you and I will wait until the day I see you again” I murmur. He is almost gone, before I wake, I hear Tobey’s voice whisper to me.

“I love you.” My eyes flutter open; I am soaked to the skin, the wind whistles through the grass. I still feel his kisses lingering on my lips, his smell clinging to my clothes. I never knew you could love someone so much in one lifetime, but it is possible, in this moment anything is possible.   

I hear my mum calling me. I hesitate before I leave my spot in the grass. Reluctant to return to reality.
