Chapter 53:- Amongst Friends
“There you are,” Kitty said, striding into the store. I let out the breath I'd been holding and leaned against the register, my limbs nearly numb from stress. For a moment, I'd expected the store to flood with a wave of bodies headed in my direction. If the Ragged's intention was to kill me with stress-induced paranoia, it was certainly working. The tension was overtaking me.

“What happened?” I asked her.

“Not here,” she said, wandering to the back of the store, rummaging through the cold case and coming back with a bottle of water that she pressed to her sweaty forehead. “Tell you later.”

“Fine.”

“So,” Kitty said, leaning beside me, “how have you been, Alex?”

The clerk gave her a look of sudden recognition. “Kitty, I haven't seen you in ages. I'm good. You?” He leaned forward and clasped her hand for a moment before settling back into his chair.

“I've seen better days, I think.”

“What's wrong?”

“Nothing I can really talk about,” she said. “Maybe some other time, though. Oh, this is my new friend Addison, by the way,” Kitty said, gesturing towards me. “I met her a few weeks ago. She just moved into the neighborhood.”

I waved and smiled. “Uh, hi,” I said, wondering just how the two of them knew each other. He didn't seem the type to frequent high-end prostitution joints, but to be honest I really had no way of telling for sure. Standing beside Kitty I felt like some kind of country bumpkin just arriving in the big bad city, waiting for the dirt and skyscrapers to devour me.

He nodded towards me, gave me a brief looking over and then turned back to Kitty. “You're in trouble again.” The way he said it sounded more like a statement and less like a question to my ears, leading me to wonder if she wasn't some sort of calamity-magnet. That would make her more like me than I was willing to admit.

“Kind of. Not sure. I'll let you guys know once it's over. Tell Celia hello for me, will you? It's been too long since I last saw her.”

He grinned, his eyes lighting up and his lips pulling back to reveal a set of shiny white teeth. My god, he could have been a model for a toothpaste advertisement in that moment. “Sure thing, Kitty. Take care of yourself, okay?”

“I will. Later.” She turned to me and grabbed my arm. “Let's go.”
