Chapter 2:- Finding a Whale in a Great Big Ocean
Keara rushed for the boat, leaving Grandpa Jim and Ethan behind. Her grandfather grabbed her younger brother up in his strong arms and hurried to catch up with her.

"Wait Keara, careful. The dock can be slippery." The second those words left his mouth he watched in horror as Keara slipped on an oily patch and skidded towards the edge of the dock. Keara's arms waved in the air, windmilling around as she tried to regain her balance, her toes were already over the edge. Her back arched as she tried to keep from falling in the dark water. Grandpa Jim caught her with his free hand and lifted her up and over, sitting her down on the dock. Grandpa Jim let go of her arm and turned to set Ethan down. Keara sat, shaken by the near-accident, for just a moment. Then, remembering their mission, she leapt back to her feet.

"We have to save the whale, come on!" Keara shouted over her shoulder.

The whale foundation's boat was at the end of the dock. Ethan could here the loud motor rumble as Juan, the boat captain, started it up. Already on board were Patricia, Christina, and others. Patricia reached out her arms as Keara ran straight towards her. Clearly Keara had already forgotten her near-miss and her grandfather's admonishments to slow down. Patricia swung Keara onto the boat then reached for Ethan. Grandpa Jim climbed on board quickly and turn to untie the stern line.

Captain Juan seeing that everyone was now on board, revved the engine, and motored out of the harbor.

Dawn would soon break over the mountains behind them but the ever-present cloud cover meant there would be little additional light. The water and sky were almost the same inky black color.

Ethan climbed up next to Captain Juan who revved the engines more now that they were at the mouth of the harbor. Ethan loved the lights and gauges on the instrument panel. Sometimes Captain Juan let him steer the boat and run the throttle. However, Ethan knew they were on a serious task now was not the time to have a little boy running the boat. Captain Juan looked down, ruffled his mussed hair even more, then again looked out to sea.

Keara still in the stern with her grandfather asked, "How will we find the whale Grandpa Jim? How can we find a trapped whale in such a great big ocean?"
