Chapter 6:- Waving Goodbye

However the whale just kept waving the pec around in the air as Christina, Patricia, and Juan swam towards the boat. They looked back as they heard a noise, like a groan, from the whale. The whale looked right at them, waved the fin once more and then dove underwater. Keara saw the calf spout and dive down too.

"She waved goodbye," said Ethan.

"Yes, maybe," said Grandpa Jim. "More likely she was getting the blood circulating in that pectoral again, but you are right big guy. It did look like a wave goodbye."

Grandpa Jim moved the throttle to idle again, and left the captain's chair. He reached over the side of the boat to give a hand to Patricia and Christina. Captain Juan had already heaved himself up and over the rail. The three sat, exhausted and dripping, while Ethan and Keara danced around them, hugging them each in turn. Around, and around, hugging their three heroes!

"You saved her! You saved the momma whale!" said Keara!

"You were so brave!" said Ethan looking at Captain Juan, "I want to be just like you when I grow up."

"You helped too Ethan," said Patricia, "we knew you were here cheering us on!"

Captain Juan, rolled forward onto his knees. He moved back till he was squatting and then he slowly stood up. He was very obviously exhausted.
"Let's get back to port!" said the captain, "I believe I am ready for my breakfast!"

They all laughed. They had all missed breakfast in their rush to get out to sea. Suddenly, now that he thought about it, Ethan was starving.
"Yes, let's go get some breakfast!"

"And I want to call mommy and tell her all about our adventure!" said Keara. I know what she is going to say. She'll say, "And what adventures did you have with Grandpa Jim in Ecuador today?" Keara went on, "And today I will have a real, real, real adventure to tell her about!"

Everyone on the boat laughed! "Yes you will Keara, yes you will!" said Patricia and Christina at the same time. Everyone laughed harder, even Captain Juan.

The boat turned toward the harbor and they all settled in for the ride. What an adventure it had been!

Suddenly right next to the boat was a spout. It was the mother whale. She made eye contact with them again, waved her pec then smashed it down in the water spraying them all with water. One more spout from her and baby, then they dove down under the water again.

Tears sprang to Keara's eyes as she watched the whale's tail lift out of the water and then slide beneath the waves. "Goodbye momma whale! Goodbye baby whale!" she whispered as she blew a kiss toward the open ocean! "Be safe and stay away from fishing nets!"
