Chapter 6:- Visit To Grandma's
A visit to either of my grandmothers means my taste buds will be singing with joy. In this case, I'm visiting Liyka, the grandmother on my mom's side. She greets me as she always does.
"Adrina, you look too thin, you need some fat on you. All pinched and green. Come on, I have food for you. Apple pie for dessert like you asked."
"Thanks Grandma." Not asked so much as begged. I love Grandma's apple pie. Every woman in my family has her own pie. Liyka's is my favorite: apple, and puff pastry. My mom's is good too: apple lemon and meringue, but I don't like her crust much. My other grandma, Alla, she does peaches and almonds. It's ok I guess. My cousin does a chocolate and wafer sort of thing, very good. Her mother-in-law does a strawberry/kiwi cream pie (yum!). My aunts... don't do much. I have two, and they are exactly alike. And neither of them makes pies. Some people are just strange.

Once I have eaten vast amounts of food and an entire pie, my grandma is satisfied. Barely. She leaves me alone and goes to watch her Russian soap operas. That's all she does these days, cooking and soap operas. She gets three Russian television channels now, so she's on cloud nine. Or seventh heaven, maybe more appropriately, since she's seventy and all. So she leaves me be, and I'm left to fend for myself. Let me explain: there is NOTHING to do at my grandma's apartment. It used to be even worse, but they got a laptop recently. Unfortunately, that laptop is at the moment occupied by my grandfather, who came out to greet me with a hug then retreated to his "study" to play on the computer. Like me, he's fond of chatting online. He's probably having one of those days. “One of those days” for my grandpa means when he's annoyed at my grandma, and he gets all snappy and irritable. Goodbye and good riddance to him on days like that.

The visit passes slowly. I'm counting the hours till my mother comes, something that can only happen here. Finally my grandpa lumbers out of the study, and starts shuffling around the kitchen, making himself a sandwich. I grab a deck of cards and linger in the kitchen, hoping he'll play with me, feeling a little shy. He makes me a sandwich too, and we sit down and eat them together. Then he plays my favorite card game with me - we are evenly matched and we both play with style. There are special, more “honorable,” ways to win, and every game ends that way. I win and lose about half and half. Then six o'clock hits, and he turns on the news. I don't expect any more responses from him.

My grandpa loves me.
