Chapter 1:- One
An old crow peeks down through a lattice of branches. He's been waiting for something to become visible in the darkness, considering tonight's meal. He shifts his weight and listens for the rustles and squeaks that mean food. Cocking his head, he concentrates on one sound, possibly a dying mouse or other bird, something faint and pitiful. Before preparing to swoop, he waits a moment longer, just to make sure he pins down the source, when a loud crack echoes through the forest.
More snaps and swooshes - he's lost any hope of his prey now, thanks to that big beast throwing the forest into chaos. He shrieks his impatience at the moon and flies off for another, quieter perch.
