Chapter 5:- Chapter 1 (Part 4)
Running across the roughly paved roads that weaved in and out through the rural town, Seth did his best to try to reach his home before the sun fell too far. Back through the many different alley way’s he came, dashing from one backstreet to the next, never stopping. He constantly kept watch of the sky above him, the sun continually and seemingly far too quickly for his tastes, falling.
Thankfully, he was close enough to his home that it wasn’t that far a jolt till he reached it. Seeing his home after exiting from another dark alley into the center of the street, he sighed in relief and ran closer. ‘Had he made it in time?’ he wondered.
Reaching his home which was a stone and clay constructed building; he placed his hands on his legs and while leaning over, panted for air. He continued to inhale and exhale deeply outside, not wishing to enter appearing as if he had barely made it.
After a brief moment and finally catching his breath, he quickly stepped inside. “Sorry I’m Late…”
Only…
Nobody was there.
“Darn it,” he exclaimed.
It was apparent to him, from observing the empty and deserted inside rooms, that his mother and father had already left for the festival. Considering his mother was preparing food for it, that meant they would have had to have left earlier than normal.
Seth sighed deeply.
After all that running and rushing, after watching the time closely, it was all for nothing.
He shrugged and knowing what to do, left the house and began to walk towards the west of the town, where the festival was being held that night. His body felt tired and exhausted from not only the recent running that evening, but also from the hard labor that he had partaken in all day while in the fields, for which this entire festival was for celebrating.
‘As long as there is good food tonight at the festival,’ he thought musingly to himself, ‘I’ll be happy.’
As he continued to walk forward, entering onto some of the more commonly used streets, he began to become one of many heading in the same direction. He’d be surprised if the entire town didn’t turn out for the festival. It was practically the biggest event of the year, except for maybe the harvest festival that would be coming later that year.
Seth sighed as he turned down another street, imagining himself being told to help harvest the food they planted with the other men.
“Excuse me, young man,” a voice came nearby him, “Young man, yes you!”
Seth halted and turned around to see who was calling out. Approaching him was a middle aged woman dressed in what might have been a cross between style and stale.
“Yes, what is it ma’am?” he asked.
“You’re Seth, correct? The son of Jerom?” she asked.
He nodded quickly, “Yes that would be right. Is there something I can do for you?”
“Yes actually, I had some complaints I wanted to speak to him about. Nobody in the blasted council will listen to me, so I figure it best to go straight to the top for answers,” she replied.
“Well, I’m sure you can find him at the festival. Should be pretty easy to spot him, simply look for the man drawing the most attention,” Seth smiled.
“Alright, thank you, have fun tonight deary,” the lady said waving as she passed him by, heading towards the festival.
Seth was used to having people approach him like this. Having a father who was Chief over the entire town and surrounding land, welcomed these kinds of situations. He was used to it. Being the youngest of three as well, didn’t help matters.
Seth stared up at the sky; twilight was descending steadily over the land. The last remnants of the sun’s light shimmered ever so lightly through the darkening sky.
Continuing as he had, he made his way further west towards the spot where the entire town was gravitating to. It was going to be a busy and probably hectic night.
“I wonder though,” he whispered as he walked with the crowd, “what might ‘they’ be doing tonight?”
The question continued to float around in his mind, ever present as he neared the festival, and along with it, a clear view of the mountain.
