Chapter 7:- Chapter 1 (Part 6)
Running after Feral through the crowded festival, the sound of music and causal talking filled the air, creating a unique atmosphere unlike what would be experienced any other time of the year. Burning torches were placed everywhere, providing a constant light source, along with the uncountable small candles situated on tables and inside paper containers.
One table after the next Seth chased after his friend, always keeping his eyes out for where Zack and the others might be. One candle after the next, one paper light after another, they continued to search. He wished Feral would hurry up and get him to where they were. It almost seemed as though he were lost himself in where he should go.
Feeling tired of chasing after him for so long he called out, “How much more do we have to go?”
“No idea,” Feral replied.
“What!? You don’t know where he is!?” he asked in disbelief.
“Well, I have an idea, but naw, I don’t really know for sure,” Feral said still going from place to place, searching for Zack and the others.
As they continued to search, Seth noticed his father a ways ahead to the east of the festival, surrounded by a crowd. His two older brothers were nearby. He noticed the woman from before who had approached him discussing something with him. It didn’t look like a pleasant conversation.
Sighing, he continued to chase after Feral.
‘Where in the heck are they?’ he thought.
“Ah! There they are!” Feral exclaimed pointing up ahead.
Seth peered ahead. Sure enough, there stood Zack and the others, talking with the girls.
“Hey! Zack!” Feral announced walking towards them, “I brought Seth like ya asked.”
“Good job,” Zack said with a wink.
Feral winked back.
“Hey Zack, what’s up?” Seth asked, unsure why he had to be rushed so quickly.
“I have something I want to show you, all of us guys do,” he said with a smile that almost made Seth want to back away.
“Oh! What is it?” asked a girl nearby.
“Oh, hey Sarah,” Seth said, noticing her sitting with the other girls from town.
“Hey, did you taste my Mother’s treats this year?” she asked enthusiastically.
“Yes, they were delicious,” he replied back smiling.
She laughed, “I’ve been having them all year long.”
“Lucky,” hissed Zack, a strong sense of jealousy growing within his stomach.
“So anyways, what is it?” Seth asked turning his attention back to Zack.
“Come on, we’ll show you,” Zack said, motioning for the other boys to follow him.
“Can we come?” asked another girl.
“No,” Zack replied point blank.
“Meany,” another girl pouted.
Walking towards Seth, Zack grabbed his hand, “Come on.”
Pulling him, he, Seth and the others left off heading west.
“Hey, where are we going?” Seth asked as he was dragged through the festival.
“Haven’t you somewhat guessed?” Zack asked surprised.
Seth looked up, there was only a little bit of the festival up ahead. ‘What’s at the end of the west side of the festival?’ he wondered.
Ad they neared the end, Seth peered from side to side, searching for what might be so important for them to show him. But as they continued to walk past each table, he could spot nothing.
Eventually they reached the edge of the festival, but instead of stopping, Zack and the others continued to walk past, stepping out into the open field outside the perimeter of the festival.
“Hey! Wait! Where are we going?! We just left the festival!” he asked shocked.
“Took ya long enough to figure that one out,” Zack laughed.
Feral laughed as well, along with several other boys. He wasn’t too happy about his current predicament. Being lead through the fields at night to some unknown location was far from his idea of a proper festivity. Thankfully though, the high harvest moon cast a bright luminescent blanket of light across the ground, allowing Seth and the others to see where they were going with ease.
Eventually, after quite a while of walking, Zack stopped, releasing his grip on Seth.
“Were here,” he said.
“Where exactly would be ‘here’?” Seth asked looking around and seeing nothing to which would provide a reason for dragging him outside the festival, and limiting his chances to eat.
“So, we were listening to you talk about the mountain earlier today, and decided to do something,” Feral replied.
“Eh?” he asked confused, now realizing that before him far up ahead was the base of the mountain.
“Climb it,” Zack said.
“Wha-?” he stuttered.
“Climb the mountain to the top, go look out on the other side and tell us what you see, we dare you,” another boy taunted.
“B-B-But,” Seth began bewildered.
“We double dog dare ya,” Feral added.
“But guys, it’s so late! And dark! And that’s a long trip up, maybe more than a day, and if I was…” he tried desperately to make excuses.
“We triple dog dare you,” Zack smirked, or at least, through the lighted darkness, it appeared to be a smirk, maybe it was worse, Seth couldn’t be sure.
He stared up at the dark towering mountain, an invisible lump falling down his throat, its monstrous size almost seemed to stare him down defiantly. Beyond it laid everything they had ever been told to stay clear from, and all the answers he wanted.
He silently gulped again.
