EPISODE 1: BREATHE, SOLDIER! IN THE CASE OF VICTORIA BEKKIT
Phase 1: So there I was...
I had this smile. This smile that always made Dustin feel better about everything. Or maybe just forget. Regardless, it was the same smile, with my teeth just barely visible between my parted lips, that I was giving him now as he asked me to go to the dance with him. I told him it was about time, and he smiled wryly. So Dustin.
My name is Victoria Marie Bekkit. I live with my father, Charles, and my mother, Gracia. As well as with Dustin and his brother Justin. We took them in off of the street when my father saw Dustin’s...talent, and I myself was surprised to find that there were others like me out there. Mainly because I had lived a very sheltered life, thanks to my ‘Condition.’
His name was Dustin Quintin Everhart, and his brother was Justin Michael Everhart. The two of them had a hard life full of poverty and death, because of the sort of peril that comes with a family like theirs.
Condition...Peril...Talent. They’re all fancy terms we come up with to curtail that nasty word...Mutant. That’s what the three of us are. Call us what you will, but we’re not like normal people, in that we have supernatural abilities that make us both feared and shunned.
Dustin and I had been living in the same household, eating the same food and watching the same television for quite some time, and I thought it was about time he asked me out already. You see, Dustin liked to be cool, calm, and collected. And a relationship was just too arbitrary for him. But deep down, we both wanted to be together for the longest time.
He scratched the back of his head wordlessly, not knowing where to take the conversation now that I had said “yes.”
“...Um...Great.” He said finally. He ran his hand through the dark brown hair that hung from his head in locks. It was longer on one side that the other, covering his right eye almost completely. His eyes were the most dazzling part of him. They were light brown that were flecked with gold when you looked closely. The way the light reflected off of them, and the moist way the highlights shone, made his eyes -which you would expect from my illustration to be bland- the most powerful part of his expressions.
“Pick me up at seven.”
“Funny.”
“Six forty-five, then.” I laughed at his awkwardness, and he laughed at my laugh. It was at this point that Ashton, a friend of Dustin’s, and a member of his ‘team’ came up to join us.
“Hey, all.” Ashton smiled wide with his thin lips, tightening the knot of his Bandana. “So’d he ask you yet?” He added rather bluntly, hands on his hips, and cocking an eyebrow at me.
I nodded enthusiastically, and he nodded, with a mocking I-told-you-she’d-say-yes look, towards Dustin.
Dustin was a part of the off-and-on Mutant Minute Men, so to speak, who were currently off duty, but frequently went to war in Asia and Europe, and even here in the U.S. sometimes. Their main enemy is this guy called Krawn who likes to stir up trouble with Humans. He’s the mastermind behind a lot of evil stuff in the world recently, like the Heaven and Hell letters that have been received by politicians and head military officials, calling for reformation of the whole social order pretty much. This guy really gets on Dustin’s nerves, since he wishes we could live in peace with the humans, but alas, we can’t. That’s why all of us have been hiding our abilities for the most part. Fortunately, though, there has been a recent rise in Mutant-friendliness, because of the huge help a lot of us have been to the military. So in a way, Krawn may be giving us a hand in creating a better world. Don’t tell Dustin I said that.
Unfortunately, I didn’t have anymore time to tease Dustin, because the bell rang for the first class to begin. I sighed, and Dustin and I tried at holding hands on the way to our classes, but when he dropped me off at my classroom, he looked like he was eager to let go. Dustin was like that, he had to over think everything.
Perhaps I need a bit more Exposition, huh? Here’s how the history goes: First, We mutants sort of emerged from normal people with a kind of Evolutionary thing or something. You can watch the X-Men for a better explanation of that sort of phenomenon. We were given super natural powers, and stuff. The huge outburst, however, happened in Japan over 50 years ago, when some experimental test subjects (the first 5 reported Gifteds) Escaped from a Japanese secret laboratory in the mountains. Their names were James Everhart, Reice Everhart, Kimiko Kurada, Seig zembog, and Damien Lane. They were reportedly tortured and harshly treated. There were a lot of things done to them that no one is proud of, but it is because of that research that we know so much about who we are and what we are.
James was Dustin’s father, and Reice was his uncle, who moved to Japan with Kimiko. Seig died of ailments he sustained in the laboratory, and Damien Lane became known as Krawn, and set out to take vengeance upon those who defiled him. He was killed in a battle with James, in which James sustained a fatal wound and died as well days later. The current Krawn is unknown and probably just as dangerous, but he is not acting quite as straight-forward as the previous Krawn did. That leads us to believe he is either unrelated, or purposely biding his time.
That’s all I know. And that’s all for my Exposition.
