Chapter 1:- Another Day
"Hey, Aubrey! Five minutes to shift change, you're taking Raj's till #2!"
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Stupid late bus. I should really get a car. Right. As if I could afford one right now. I dash to the back office to stow my bag in my locker, grabbing my apron and struggling to get it on as I go. Stella's going to kill me if I take any longer.
"There's my favorite girl, Aubrey! Would you watch the muffins? They're done in half an hour. I need to go, my exam just got moved!" shouts Raj as he leaves. He's a junior at the university close by and works part time to help make ends meet. I didn't know what he was doing working before an exam but he's a smart kid so he probably didn't need cramming time like I know I did.
I checked the schedule to see who else I'm working with. Supervisor: Stella; Drive-thru: Andy and Jules; Floor: Cheska and Aubrey. Yay, no monkeys that I need to work with today.
I walk out to the floor. Looks to be busy today. Most are kids with their laptops, probably studying, and the usual groups of seniors who enjoy their afternoon tea everyday like clockwork. I walk up to the till to replace Stella. White haired Marge, who comes in everyday with what looks like her posse from the Home, comes up with a smile.
"Hi Marge, how are you? The usual, chamomile tea with one skimmed milk no sugar and a raisin scone on the side?"
"Goodness, I don't know how you do it. Why, I wouldn't even know what to get if you didn't remember it for me!" she laughs.
"Thank you, dear. Oh, that's right. Could you please add a small coffee and what was it now... A chocolate chip cookie, I believe. You see, my friend here celebrated her birthday yesterday and I promised I'd treat her today."
