Chapter 1:- Prologue; Lathus’s Last Journal entry
Legend tells of how we, the elves of Alnoir, lived peacefully in our tree-bound cities and Alcoves of the forest. Our tall, redwood castles towered into the sky, unopposed, and undeterred. Then, from across what is now known as the Acid Sea, the humans came. They came by boat, an unbelievable feat now, but back then it was very possible, though we had not yet considered it. Many have asked why our Sea, once the beautiful Sea of Galidor, became Acidic. Many of our kind hold firmly to the belief that the world itself is tainted by bloodshed and hate. Animosity has a life of it’s own, to destroy and to corrupt.
The legend continues, they came to seize our lands by force. We used our superior magical abilities to ward them off, the resulting conflict was the beginning of this very war which is still today fought. It has not spanned across the ages continuously, but every now and again we find ourselves in the same quarrel once again, and “bloodshed can only beget bloodshed.” that’s what my Master says.
The humans of Malachia consider their race superior, and with that logic set out (this time) to conquer for the sake of enlightening and peace. But the rash, illogical, and down-right barbaric actions of their soldiers contradicts their creed, and results in violent retaliation. We here live on this island, away from all the fighting of the larger continents. Most believe that there is no knowledge of our existence, but master and I tend to believe that they simply have no interest in such a small, unnamed territory yet.
But I foresee a brighter future; I foresee a world connected by my Master’s invention. A gate that will take anyone to any Continent, at any point in time, by the utterance of a single word. A world brought together under one, central rule…a benevolent rule. A peaceful life.
But alas, things are far from as they seem. There is a darker force at work; stirring in the dark. I have seen the next enemy of the armies of Man and Elf alike. The enemies of Life itself. My only hope is that when it is time for the world to join together, that animosity and distrust will not destroy our chances of defeating this enemy.
I will not write again in this journal until I can see depict the future as it is, not as I hope it will be. May the Fates guide me to that day safely.
