The sky was blackish dark, not even the light from the moon can break through it. I was standing alone in some kind of forest, there’s nothing but dried up trees and grasses surrounding me. I walked around trying to find some kind of path out of this creepy looking forest.. Taking only a few steps, I hear a cry of a man’s voice from somewhere in the forest. I was so freaked out by what the cry means that I made a run for the path wanting to the out of here.
Just before I can reach there, a hand grabbed hold of my shoulder. Trying not to scream, I turn around to look who it is. Standing in front of me was a middle aged man, that’s dressed in a black robe that blends in with the dark forest. His hair was blackish white with beard down past his chin. He was staring at me with those soulless black eyes.
“Foolish Aranises, do you think you can defeat me?” ask the man.
“Uh?” before I can say another word he released my shoulder, and raise both of his arms up while chanting in a strange language. Black clouds appears above him with lighting flashing from it, the clouds starts to form into a black head of a dragon. The dragon looks at me as it get closer and closer. Then it opens that huge mouth of his and charge towards me. I turn around and started to run….
“BEEP! BEEP!” the digital alarm went on “BEEP! BEEP!”
I woke up breathing hard. Thought I was going to died, good thing it was just a dream, I thought to myself. Trying to breathe normally, I reach besides me for the night stand and switched off the alarm. I can feel the warmth of the morning sunlight shining through the bedroom window. Rubbing my eyes from sleepiness, I got out of bed and headed toward the bathroom down the hall to get ready for school. After finished brushing my teeth and hair, I went back to my bed and pick up the alarm clock to check the time. Its thirty minutes till eight.
“Oh no! I’m soo late for school!” Throwing down the alarm on the bed, I went to my closet and pick whatever cloth I can find. Once dressed, I grabbed my backpack and rush down the stairs.
“Honey!” called someone from the kitchen, “Aren’t you going to have some breakfast first?”
“No thanks! I’m going to be late for school. Bye mom! ” Putting on my shoes, Iopen the front door and steps out, closing it behind me and racing down the streets hoping to get to school in time before the tardy bell rings.
I was only half way to school, when something jumps out in front of me out of nowhere on the sidewalk. Stopping just in time before stepping onto whatever it is that had just popped out. Looking down a red-orange furred cat was standing in front of me with its eyes looking back at mine. Unlike those cats that are in the pets store or walking down the street, this one was different. I mean the special kind of different. Her eyes were like the color of blazing fire to match her red-orange fur. It was simply the rarest and most beautiful cat I’ve ever seen that I forget all about being late for school.
Squatting down I stretch out a hand towards the cat wanting to pet her. She didn’t hiss or run away from me like cats are supposed to do when a stranger is near them, instead she just stood there looking at me then at my out stretched hand deciding if I meant her harm or not. She took a step forward, stretching her neck and took a sniff at my finger tips. Its must have decided that I meant her no harm since she rubbed her head against my palm. Her fur where soft and smooth like a baby’s blanket I ran my hand from the top of her head to her back.
“Purrrrrr” she cried when I rubbed the back of her neck the sound so adorable. Just when I was about to pick her up a school bus drove by.
I turned my head to look at the bus and remembered something. “Oh no! I forgot about school,” I turned around and was about to bid good bye to the cat only to find out she’s gone. Forgetting about the cat I ran as fast as I can to school.
The first warning bell went off by the time I got to the front entry of the school building. There were still some students rushing down the hall trying to get to their class. I went to my locker to put up my things and getting out a few books to read during lunch break. Before closing my locker I check myself in the mirror that’s attached to the back of my locker door and make sure my hair isn’t a mess. But what shock me isn’t the mess of my hair but the color of my eyes, they’re not their dark brown color instead they’re flame-red like.
“What in the world?” I was so close to freaking out and between running straight to the nurse’s office or just dial 911 on my cell. Making sure it wasn’t just my imagination I closed my eyes and rub them with my arm a few times before opening them again, looking back at the mirror and saw that my eyes were back to their normal color.
“It really was just my imaginations” I told myself, even though there’s a small feeling inside me saying that it wasn’t. Remembering I was late for class I closed my locker and rush to my first period.
Before walking into my science class I took a peek from the window and seeing that our teacher, Mr. Willer, isn’t in the class yet, I went in.
“Morning, Faith” greeted Beth, who sat at the same lab table next to me.
“Morning” I greeted back.
“I heard from the other science teachers down the hall talking about burning chemicals today.” She told me.
“Really?” I ask.
“Yeah! Or at least that’s what I heard.” After she said that, Mr. Willer walked into class wheeling a cart full of beakers and burners to his table at the front of the room.
“Well class, today we’re going to do an experiment that involves chemicals and fire,” announce Mr. Willer. “So I want you guys to clean everything off the table and put them under it. Those of you that have long hair make sure you have something to tie it back or come and get a robber band from me.”
I lean toward Beth and whispered “You know you’re really good at getting information from somewhere else”
“I know, I think it a detective trait that came from my family” she whispered back, every member of Beth’s family was a police, a detective, or a FBI agent.
“Yeah maybe” I said.
Mr. Willer pick up a chemical burner and five beakers from the cart, one was empty and the rest was filled with different chemical and placed them on his lab table. He faced us and tell us what to do to get ready for the lab “You will be partnered with whoever is sitting next to you. One of you will come and get five different beakers one that’s empty and four that’s filled with different chemical and the other will come get a chemical burner.”
Everyone got up and rush to the cart to get what they needed for today’s lab. It was really hard for Beth and me to grab anything with all those shoving and pushing. We finally were able grabbed what we needed, I got the five beakers while Beth got the chemical burner.
After everyone went back to their table Mr. Miller spoke again, “Don’t touch or do anything with the burner and chemicals after you put those on your table. Now I want all of you to put your hands on your laps and look at me” He grabbed the empty beaker and place it on the burner “I think some of you already guessed that today we’ll be doing chemical experiment to help you review for tomorrow’s test. I don’t want you to do anything until I show you how to do it, so no touchy, no smelling, and please be careful not to spill anything.”
I watch as our science teacher picked up two beakers from the table, one was filled with red chemical and the other was filled with blue chemical, he then pour little of each into the empty beaker and turn up the burner.
“I want all of you to guess what two chemicals I just poured into the empty beaker by looking at its reaction toward each other.” He said looking up at us.
We all watched as the reaction is taking place in the beaker and trying to remember all the chemical’s reactions we’ve learn in the past few weeks. Without my knowing, my eyes drifting lower until I’m looking at the flame that’s burning beneath the beaker. I daydreamed what will happen if the burner suddenly got out of control and cause the table to go on fire then we can get out of school early.
“Ahhhh!” I was dragged back to reality by a high pitch scream.
I couldn’t turn my head around to find out who made that scream, I was too caught up in what was happening in front of me. Mr. Willer’s lab table is cover in fire. Everyone in the class was coughing from breathing in smokes, including me.
“Someone get all the windows and door open” shouted our science teacher, Beth and I went to get the door open while half of the classmate went to get all the windows open and the other half rush out to the hall coughing trying to get the smoke out of their lung. Mr. Willer went to the right corner and takes down the fire extinguisher for the wall, and quickly put out the fire. Teachers from other class came to see what’s going on.
“What happened here?” ask Mrs. Lyn from the next door math class.
“I have no idea the burner suddenly went out of control” replied Mr. Willer.
Mrs. Lyn looked at the white covered lab table, then at the fire extinguisher that our science teacher still holds in his hand and understood what had happened in our class.
“Is anyone hurt?” She asked
“No” replied those of us who remains in class, though some of us are still shaking from what just happen in class.
“How did the burner went out of control it was new, didn’t it just arrive yesterday?” She asked, as more teacher and students from other class came to take a look.
“Maybe it bumps into some hard object when it was delivered here.” answered Mr. Willer. “Anyway since the school bell is about to ring I’m going to let you guys out early. And since today’s review lesson was a disaster, I will move the testing day to the day after tomorrow so you can have enough time to review for the test.”
I was heading out the door when Beth came up next to me, “I really hope Mr. Willer calls that company and have those broken burner return before another class ends up like our class.” She told me.
“Yeah, me too.” I said, at least I won’t be in there when the next class starts.
“I’ll see you at lunch then” she said, turned and walked away.
On my way to gym I keep on hearing I heard the sound of a cat’s meow, and when I look behind me there wasn’t a cat in sight but students walk to their class.
“Hey, what are you looking at?” ask someone. I turn around and saw Nicky wave a hand in front of my eyes.
“Oh nothing I just thought I hear a cat meowing” I told her.
“It problely a cat from outside” she said, “there are a lots of stray cat on the street these day.
“Maybe… oh well come on or were going to be late” and we began walking. I got a feeling that I’m being watched.
At gym class, we had a substitute because our gym teacher is home with a cold. Since our sub isn’t good at teaching gym we had the entire class period to play soccer. Just for the fun to see which team is the best, we had girl’s team versus boy’s team. It usually the boys’ that won the game, but I got a feeling that today’s gonna be different.
“Alright get ready!” yelled the sub holding a soccer ball up in the air, “And set…Go!”
After she dropped the ball everyone from both teams went to get it. At the beginning of the game didn’t look good for the girls’ team. The boys already have 3 point while the girls have only 2.
When it was my turn to kick two boys blocked my way from goal. We’re one point from making this game a tie if only I can get past these two.
“You can’t get past us give us the ball already.” Laugh one of the boys.
“Come on Faith, you can do it!” cheer one of the girls.
I couldn’t make a decision on what move to make in order to score a point. When those two are about to steal the ball from me, a thought popped in my head. Before I had the time to decide if it is the right move to make, my legs began moving on it’s on.
I kicked the ball as high up in the air as I can, turned around to my back is facing the flying ball and jumped. By doing a back flip in the air, I brought my right leg over my head and kick the falling ball sending it straight for the goal. After the kick I landed on the ground lightly on my feet like a cat.
The ball went flying by too fast for the goal keeper to save, and in one point for the girls’ team. It was the first time in this semester that the boys didn’t win. Everyone was silence then looking back and forth between the ball and me with their eyes so wide you will think they are wearing those funning glasses.
“YEHHH!” a girl yelled giving the person next to her a hug. After a while the rest of the girls join in.
“Oh My God! Faith, how did you do that?” asked my best friend, Anna, when she comes over to me.
“I-I don’t know. It just happens,” I told her the truth. Even I was amazed by what I just did, it came to me naturally as if I already know how to do it.
“Well, whatever you did do it again next time. We are soo going to kick those boys’ butt next time with your new “move” on our team.” with that she grabbed my hand and led me to a group of girls who give me a high-fives and hugs. Another rumor for Anna to pass on, I thought. After gym class was over, we changes back in to our clothes and headed to our next class.
“Faith, wait for me!” called someone from behind me. I was in the hall heading to my math class.
“Oh!” I said when I turned around to see Betty trying to catch up to me, “Hi Betty!”
“Hey” She walks up beside me. Betty and I are childhood friends; we were also born in the same hospital. “So is it true?” She asked.
“What’s true?” I asked back, but I think I have a pretty good idea what she’s asking. Rumor in this school spreads pretty fast, and Betty is the kind of person that likes to seek out if the rumors are true.
“You know what I meant, about you jumping in the air doing a back flip move to score a point in the soccer game.” She said, as we walk into the math class together. I didn’t answer her until I sat in my assigned seat and Betty sat next to me. We were the first people to be in class today.
“Y-yeah, I think.” I answered.
“How did you do it? You never learn cheerleading or gymnastic before. And if I remember correctly you never done a back flip before, much less landing on your feet after the flip.” Her eyes were wide with amazement and surprise.
“I don’t know. It just happens.” I told her what I told Anna. Just then the tardy bell ring, the rest of the students enters the classroom. Our math teacher, Mr. Milltin, was right behind them. After all the students were in their seat, Mr. Milltin begins to check rolls.
“You must have learn it somewhere and forgotten it, because people don’t just happens doing a back flip.” She whispered leaning in closer to me, “Or maybe your mom used to be a gymnastic, and you inhered some of her gymnastic genes.”
“Maybe… But I never heard her mention any thing about her being a gymnastic before” I whispered back.
“Well, then you should ask her. And if you found out anything be share to tell me. Okay?”
“O.K. You know I always tell you things.” I promised her.
“I know, but just in case.”
The rest of the day went by with people giving my high-fives and a cheer. Some even ask if I will join their sports club, which I reject. I hate sports.
On my way home I was thinking on asking my mom if there is something wrong with me, or if I should make an appointment with a therapy. Either way there’s something defiantly not normal with me. I mean you can’t make a fire grow bigger just by looking at it or knowing how to do a high jump back flip that I’ve never done before.
By the time I got home, the house was dark expect for the light coming off from the kitchen. “Mom, I’m home” I yelled when I walk in the front door. “Mom?” I called out again when no one answered. “Hmm, maybe she’s out”
Turning on the light in the hall, I went to the kitchen to see if mom left any note for me. And there it was a yellow sticking note on the refrigerator door from mom.
Faith,
There’s an emergence at the hospital. I won’t be back until 10 p.m.
Sorry, I didn’t have time to make dinner for you to microwave.
Love, Mom
Sticking the note back on the fridge, I went up to my room. It’s been a tire day today so I’ll be taking a little nap.
Throwing my backpack on the floor and kicking off my shoes, I went to lie on the bed. Without knowing I fell asleep.
