Chapter 1:- The Other Side
She walked along side the road - kicking up dust and dirt with the steel toe of her big black
leather boots. Her old orange plastic suitcase banging her knee - her shoulders slouched and
aching. Blisters were forming on the palm of her hand. Her long dark hair looking unwashed and
knotted, twisted in the wind - Black eyeliner and blue mascara was smeared under her eyes-
making them look darker and more bruised then they already were. But upon her lips, red
and chapped, was a strangely beautiful smile.
"I've cried my tears, I've been hurt and hurt myself, I’ve been in hell too long."
Her heart raced as it had for days - She let out a laugh-sharp and harsh as she wondered...
Had they even noticed she was gone?
Where was she going? Who really knew? Oh well...she didn't care. As long as it wasn't there.
Some place faraway. A place where I can be safe. A place where girls wear fairy wings and boys
dress up in glitter. A place where "real" is a naughty word and kisses are always free. A place
where no one looks at you like a piece of meat. A place where Mommies's don't hit you and
Daddies never touch. A place where no one cries.
A place where all the boys and girls turn into butterflies!
She stopped right then, as a tear rolled down and she fell upon her knees.
She pulled and pulled at her long dark hair and screamed at the top of her lungs.
"Where is this place - where I can go - to never be scared again?!?!Where is this place of
unicorns - shooting stars and princesses draped in lace? Where is this place where I can go and be
free of pain forever?!?!"
She opened her suitcase and fumbled for her blade.
She looked up at the sky - the clouds hung low- huge and black.
She looked down at her arms - white.
She cut her veins vertically and laid her head in the dirt.
Hours later, when she awoke a soft rain sprinkled her face. She looked around and laughed to herself.
"How stupid I must really be."
All around her rose great green trees spun with dewy webs. She took a breath of sweet lilac and
stretched her arms and legs. She peared into the crystal brook that danced along beside her and
as she looked at her reflection - in the blue mirror water - a gasp excaped her mouth! For
unfolding upon her back were the most magnificent wings.
Purple - black - blue and silver like oil reflecting the moon.
She touched them softly and sighed - speechless - swept off her feet by her own sheer beauty.
And from all around her there rose a whisper - a tiny little giggle. Looking up she gasped again -
for drifting out from behind the trees and behind the little bushes - splashing lightly through the
water - flowing from the highest branches- where girls and boys just like her. There lips painted
-red and pink. There eyes wide and lined in a rainbow - sparkling -twinkling in the warm rays
of sun. And from behind every one, rose a pair of unique and extraordinary wings. She giggled a
bit as they danced around her - beckoning her to join them.
And as she stood her wings fluttered and she was lifted off the ground.
She laughed and sang and felt lighter then air.
“How silly of me to be so sad - when this place has always been here -
right behind my darkest hours-
on the other side of life."
