I hurried through the streets. I couldn't leave Mei alone too long, I knew I was already a bit late; it was the first time I've ever been late to pick up Mei. I couldn't believe it. But I had a reason. Perhaps Mei wouldn't understand, but it was valid. Ryo had been angry at the mention of his brother. I couldn't have left him in that state, so I had to talk to him about other things, so that he wouldn't think about it too much and it wouldn't be too bad when I left.
I saw Mei standing in front of the door of the Gymnastic Club. I saw an other little girl say goodbye to her as she left with her mom. I felt even guiltier than before; she was usually the first one picked up. I ran over to her.
"Mei!" She looked up, "I'm so sorry I'm late!" I said as I got a bit closer.
"It's okay, big sister! I'm sure you were really busy." she said with a smile. I couldn't help it. I hugged her tightly. She was so mature for her age and unselfish. I turely loved her like my own little sister. It didn't matter that we weren't related by blood. We knew that we had a bond that was invisible to others. But also, she was strong and knew how to support me. And I hoped that I was strong enough to do the same for her.
"Thank you." I wispered, as I let her go. I smiled at her and she smiled back. "So, how did Gymnastics go today?" I asked taking her hand as we started walking home.
"It was really fun! I got to demonstrate the exercises today!" she said happily.
"That's great, Mei! I'm so proud of you!" and I was. "What about your homework? Do you have a lot?" I asked.
"Um, not a lot but still a fair amount of maths." she said her smile fading a little.
"Don't worry I'll help you with it!" I said smiling at her.
"Thank you!" her smile came back, brighter this time. Seeing her happy like this really made me happy as well. And helping her with her homework would also let me spend even more time with her. We walked home chatting happily about everything and nothing. We got home just in time to escape from the rain.
