Chapter 289:- ...

What is it about this alley? It’s bleak, dismal and empty. The ideal alley in many ways. Though it holds a quality that I cannot name.

Flames roar to life at the end before me, turning it into a one-way street. Does this city have any sort of gas pipe maintenance section for out of hours emergencies, and who monitors their effectiveness? Matching flames erupt at the other end, making the narrow path a veritable double dead-end. Behind the two sheets of flame, rows of viciously pointed wooden stakes have risen from the ground, all slanted towards the middle of the alley. Towards me. A girl could feel unwanted, if she allowed such negative thoughts.

Objects are dropped from unseen windows above by unseen hands. They are garlic bulbs. Is this what the living would call overkill? And anyway, can something be over-killed?

“Show yourselves,” I demand, hands on hips, determined not to flinch when the bulbs hit me. In response, flaming arrows rain down in battalions towards my unprotected head. This isn’t such a model alley after all.

How to go anywhere, without bringing death closer? I try to cross the dimensions, but the witch’s teaching ability was manifestly lacking in all departments.

Finally, the pain of the cheerleader squad will be over. The alley ripples.
