The street was still and deathly quiet. It was a Sunday evening, and commercial districts closed early. The rain on the ground sullenly reflected the pale moonlight above. I saw my shoes flash on the slick asphalt. Walking home in this desolate loneliness was becoming eerily familiar, almost like a strange habit. I was unsure why but somehow I enjoyed this strange kind of peace on my way home.

There were few people on the streets, since I intentionally picked out a route that were mostly suburban homes and old shabby shops. There were only a few late night noodle stands that were still intact and open.

I was home for the weekend, as my parents were out all of Saturday and Sunday morning. They told us they were on a business trip, but I had an uncany feeling they were looking for a smaller residence to move to. Our financial situation wasn’t at all that great. But this was common, with the economy on the brink of a straight drop.

Nevertheless, my younger sister and I had the house to ourselves, and as a result, the church missed our attendance this week. Tonight, my parents returned, and now free as a bird, I hastily went out with my high school friends for dinner. By the time we finished and now finding myself homebound it was probably 10.

I reached a quieter section of the neighbourhood, which was nearly all cramped homes piled on top of each other. It was completely silent. The dark shrouded these homes like a blanket, suffocating all audible sound. I found myself next to a garden park, which during the day you would see manmade streams and bridges complete with groves of cherry trees. It was the neighbourhood's center of serenity.

So much for serenity as I heard a cut-throat scream and loud voices ahead. It wasn’t too surprising though, although this area was a more mature population, youth hang out at the park. I pretended I didn’t hear a thing and kept on walking.

“Tasukete!” I heard a girl’s voice call out. I heard male voices but I couldn’t hear what they were saying.

I cautiously approached and moved closer. I checked to make sure I was still on the sidewalk, so I could just pass on by, if I had to. Then for a split second, I glanced sideways and I saw a van and two men who were surrounding someone. One of them grabbed her by the arms and was pulling her towards a van. He clamped his hand over her mouth. There was probably a driver in the van ready to take off as soon as she was inside. She was struggling fiercely but to no avail. It didn't take a genius to figure out what was happening. I paused. I probably wouldn’t be able to make out any faces. as it was pitch black in the park.

Although crime rates in Japan were low, not every case was reported. I was not sure what was going on but I felt an kick in the gut to do something. I looked around, there was no one around. I could call the cops but it would take them another fifteen minutes to get here. I had to stop them beforehand.

What the heck. I dropped my bag and walked towards them slowly.

“Is there something going on here?” I heard myself say.

I couldn’t see her face, but the girl turned towards me with what I’m assuming were wide frightened eyes which was about all I could make out in the dark and cried for help but the guy pinning her down covered her mouth.

“Mind your own business kid.” One of them growled.

“And let you harass someone?”

They gave me a tired smirk and both of them approached me. There wasn’t a third driver in the van I realized. The girl was free. I hand-signalled her to run. But she didn’t budge. Did she not see me?

The two men which I recognized as probably nearing their mid-20s. That makes them older than me by a few years. They were also slightly bigger, one of them had a stronger build, and the other was taller but thinner. I felt my heart pounding and adrenaline pumping in my body. The last fight I’ve been in would probably be when I was still in highschool. Some of my friends always got involved with the wrong crowd. Coincidentally, I was caught into the fray once. I still remembered the bruises I collected. But nevertheless, I could hold up my own in a brawl. I remembered I had to relax. The best state of mind is when you are relaxed. And alert.

They were probably seven feet away from me now. They moved slowly closer. I brushed my bangs out of my face.

Rule one. Strike first. If you can. And strike smart. It’ll surprise and throw your opponents off. Especially when they have a leverage over you, like in this case, there were more of them and they won in size. After that you force a sense of fear in them, whether they know it or not. Then you gain the upper hand. And it helped that I had several years of martial arts under my belt.

The two of them were probably just hoping to threaten or intimidate me enough to get me to leave. When there are two, presumably, in the usual scenario, one would try to put me in a firm hold so I will pretty much be immobile. But of course, I couldn’t let that happen.

Instead, I took two quick steps and closed the distance between us. They were surprised and froze for a split second, which would be enough of an advantage for me. Seeing that I was moving forward, the one on my right finally took a swing for my face. But it was too late, I had the forward momentum and I was too close. I twisted my body right and caught his arm with my left. I saw his eyes widen. I was still moving forward so I drove an elbow as hard as I could into his face. He stumbled back. I skipped sideways around him to put the second target in my line of vision.

The second guy was almost way too close for my liking, so without much thought, I spun a kick and aimed for his stomach. His arms were well up at shoulder level and he was throwing a punch so my foot connected. I felt a sickening thud on flesh. But I probably only hit his kidneys, with him moving sideways. His fist to reached me at around the same time as my kick. I ducked and sidestepped but his large fist glanced my jaw. I stepped back and nearly staggered. But I could deal with that. It would probably leave a bruise.

I shouted for the girl to run. She didn’t move.

“Move.” I hissed. The two men was approaching cautiously again. They knew they could take me down by now. Two on one usually didn't yield good results. She mumbled thank you or something and finally got the drift.

I backed off from both of them who have fully recovered, despite my heavy hitters. Now they were probably angry and slightly shaken up. It would be a dangerous combination. So instead I grinned at them and suddenly spun around.

They swore and came sprinting after me. It would be a close call. My fingers hooked around my bag on my way out of the park and pumped my legs as hard as I could. I cut through the park, and nearly tripped as I hurdled a bench before I got through to the other side.

I threw a glance over my shoulder and found that they were still close behind. Making a sharp left, it took me to a side street and I felt victorious when found the alleyway I was looking for.

I raced down the alley and at the end of it, it looked like a dead end with a fence rising up. This was somewhere I've thoroughly explored in my high school days.

They were following still but lagging six meters or so behind. It would be enough time for me.

As I reached the fence, I tensed up my legs and aimed for the wall to the side. I planted one foot on the small nook in the wall on the right and pushed off of it. I cleared the entire fence in one go and jumped off landing on a patch of grass. I was now in someone’s backyard.

I heard a light thump as they hit the fence and a string of curses. But the two men didn’t come after me.

I was panting as I climbed over the fence on the other side and back onto the street. The girl had disappeared.

That was quite enough for one night.

But little did I know it was the first time I met her.
