Chapter 1:- No Parking

The land that the supermarket was on had been adjacent to a small river. There was a row of willow trees that graced the banks of the river on either side. When the area was developed and the supermarket was built, the river was covered over and the water flowed underground into a sewer. The willow trees were uprooted and taken away or cut down and destroyed. There was one last willow tree left on the edge of the parking lot.

A small black car had been parked in their lot for several days now. After almost a week, the manager decided that he must urge the owner to move on. As he approached, a young man exited the car. The manager confronted him and asked him to move his car. The young man replied that the car was broken and had to be repaired before he could move it and promised to do it soon and quickly left.

The store manager after waiting another day called the police to have the car moved. At first, a single officer came but when he looked into the car, he became visibly excited and was on his radio for sometime explaining and describing the car. Soon, there were many police officers in the parking lot and a few moments later an ambulance arrived. It was not sounding it siren and it was not rushing to the scene.

The police later told the manager that they had found a person in the car. That is all that he could tell the manager. However, they questioned him about when the car first showed up and how the person he spoke to about the car looked like. They asked him why he allowed the car to say in the lot for so long, and if he saw anyone else visiting the car.

Later, he saw on the news that the police had found a young woman in the car. She appeared to be in her early or mid thirties. There was bruising on her body and marks around her neck. The car belonged to a woman from Kyoto who was reported missing a month ago. The police were looking for the man on suspicion of abandoning a body.

Forty four days later, the manage was working the night shift. He closed the cash registers, printed out the day’s receipts and placed the cash in the safe. It was almost 2:00 AM when he finally locked up the office and went to his car. In the far corner of the parking lot, next to the lone willow tree, he saw a car with the cabin light on. No one should be in the parking lot at this time.  Perhaps it were some young kids doing mischief in his parking lot.

He approached the car as he got closer, he could hear a girl sobbing. As he peered into the car, a young girl with her hands on her face was crying in a low mournful tone. Tears were running down her hands. She must have been crying for awhile. He looked down and saw that there was a puddle around his feet. She could haven’t been crying that much he joked to himself. He imagined perhaps she was drinking and  may have spilled something. Maybe she was trying to sleep her drink off before driving home.

“Excuse me. Miss. Is something wrong? Can I help you?”

The girl with her face still in her hands halting replies, “I can’t drive home.”

“If you’ve had too much to drink, you can sleep if off in the car here if you like.

“No, I haven’t been drinking. I can’t drive.”

“OK then. What’s wrong? Can I help you?”

“You see?”

As she took her hands away from her face and looked up at the manager, he could see that she had no face. No eyes, no nose, no mouth, just her long black hair partially covering her pale egg featureless face.

The manager let out a gasp and turned to run and tripped. He saw that his feet were tangled in long black hair. He managed to crawl away and stumble half running away from the car. It was a small black car. He heard a girl’s voice laughing as if taunting him.

Off in the distance, he saw the night watchman. He pulled himself together and ran towards the watchman.

“Help! Help me!”

The night watchman shined the flashlight towards the manager and said, “What’s wrong?!”

The manager panting, gasps out, “A, a, girl, a monster! There, in that car!”

“What do you mean a monster?”

“She, no, it. It had no face.”

The night watchman then lowered his flashlight to the ground and said, “No face?”

“Yes, no, I mean yes! No face. She had no eyes, no mouth. Nothing!”

The watchman then pointed the flashlight to his face and said, “Was it something like this?” and revealed an egg-like, smooth featureless face….
